Richard has been responsible for the delivery of a wide range of project work across many sectors. His career began in Oxford, where he developed expertise in science and research facilities, higher education, and heritage buildings. A decade spent in London broadened Richard’s experience to encompass large-scale residential and commercial projects, leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams on iconic developments such as Battersea Power Station and Olympia London.
Returning to Oxford, Richard is part of the office senior leadership group and has responsibility for the MEP team. He plays an active role in concept design and takes pride in driving value from early client engagement. He has a passion for pragmatic sustainable design and believes that engineering solutions (and the way in which they are presented) should be kept as simple as possible. His current focus is around the advanced manufacturing and science and research sectors.
Our design approach to Building Services Engineering is to understand the clients brief, interrogate the needs and operation of the building and utilise innovative methods in the design process. As buildings are responsible for over 40% of all energy consumption throughout the world, the responsibility of the Building Services Engineer to minimise carbon emissions and reduce energy consumption, to meet regulatory change and the sustainable agenda, is vitally important.
Our approach to design is to passively drive the building design and fabric to maximise the performance of the building before consideration is given to selecting Building Services systems. Once this is achieved, selection of equipment is made against simplicity in operation, future maintainability and systems to provide first class internal environmental conditions.

Phil is Managing Partner for our Cambridge office and leads our Building Services Engineering discipline, which has over 100 engineers based across 10 locations.
Phil balances his managerial tasks while remaining resolutely client and project focused.
He is very active in our defence and security sector and leads projects with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the MOD and Boeing Defence. As well as supporting these major clients, he also leads regional projects with regional design teams.

He has a particular interest in education and public buildings. A notable high point of his career was heading the building services team that helped deliver the Mary Rose Museum.
