UKGBC launches the UK’s first climate resilience roadmap

The UK built environment is already feeling the effects of climate change

Climate hazards such as flooding, overheating, wildfires, drought and storms are no longer distant possibilities—they are present-day threats. Climate change is already causing loss of life, serious health impacts, and significant economic disruption. Over half of UK homes are at risk of overheating, and millions more are vulnerable to flooding, putting lives, livelihoods, and the wider economy in jeopardy.

A call for urgent, coordinated action

To build true climate resilience, the UK must transform its built environment. Without urgent intervention, the damage, disruption, and inequality already being felt will only intensify. Resilience must be embedded across all areas—from national policy through to planning, design and everyday operation.

What the UK Climate Resilience Roadmap delivers

The newly launched UK Climate Resilience Roadmap sets out a clear, evidence-based strategy to help the built environment adapt to climate hazards. It calls for integrated action across sectors to create a future where our buildings and infrastructure are not only protected from climate risks but are also regenerative, adaptable, and fit for a changing world.

Developed through cross-industry collaboration, the Roadmap draws on cutting-edge thinking from some of the most trusted names in the built environment sector. It aims to accelerate progress through:

  • Setting science-based targets and measurable metrics for climate resilience
  • Outlining critical actions for stakeholders across the industry
  • Recommending key policy levers at both local and national levels
  • Defining a clear pathway to achieving a climate-resilient built environment by 2050

Susie Sidley, Sustainability Partner at Ridge and member of the steering group for the climate resilience roadmap, said, “It is clear that this is a critical time for climate action- not only reducing our carbon emissions but ensuring that we adapt to the climate related hazards which are already affecting people in the UK. Climate resilience is something which I am particularly passionate about and therefore I am proud that Ridge have been involved in the development of the UKGBC Climate Resilience Roadmap. This provides a much needed pathway for UK built environment stakeholders to follow to achieve a climate resilient built environment”
