Ridge delivers new elite sports facility for University of Portsmouth’s ambitious masterplan

30 May 2025

Ridge is proud to have supported the University of Portsmouth in delivering a major milestone in its £250 million Estate Masterplan – the Spinnaker Building, home to the new Portsmouth Elite Athlete Centre (PEAC).

Ridge provided architecture, cost management, and project management services on this flagship development, which officially opened on 9 May 2025, and is part of the University’s £250 million Estate Masterplan. Designed in collaboration with the University and Eleiko, a leading manufacturer of strength and conditioning equipment, the centre is a state-of-the-art sports facility designed to support elite-level training, teaching and research.

Located within the University’s Spinnaker Building, the new PEAC features Olympic-standard equipment and facilities, including:

  • Eight dedicated lifting stations
  • A 17m custom turf track with sleds and performance training tools
  • 24 International Weightlifting Federation-approved barbells and plates
  • A full suite of free weights and specialist gym equipment

The facility has been designed with a sprung concrete floor system to safely accommodate the heavy loads of competition-grade equipment and is set to become an Eleiko certified strength facility – marking it as a standout venue for athletic development in the region.

Beyond student use, the gym also offers wider community benefit. The University has collaborated with Portsmouth City of Sanctuary, providing weekly strength and conditioning sessions to people seeking sanctuary in Portsmouth – reinforcing the University’s vision for a more connected and inclusive campus.

Ridge worked closely with the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences to create a high-performance space that mirrors professional training environments. The collaborative and agile approach taken throughout the project allowed the team to save valuable time and cost without compromising quality or ambition.

The completion of PEAC also unlocks the next phase of the University’s transformation. As one of the first major projects in its city-centre masterplan, this project acts as a catalyst – setting a new standard for facilities and helping to shape a vibrant, high-performing campus for students, staff and the wider Portsmouth community.
