UK NZCBS launch

24 September 2024

Today marks the launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Standard’s Pilot Version - a technical standard designed to help the built environment sector confidently demonstrate that buildings meet the UK’s carbon and energy goals.

This is a significant step for the built environment industry as it creates a unified approach for defining what “net zero carbon” truly means for buildings in the UK. The standard offers clear, consistent guidelines and creating a level playing field for the entire industry.

The standard sets ambitious but achievable requirements for building performance and construction quality, addressing critical areas such as upfront carbon, operational energy use, fossil-fuel-free operations, renewable energy and refrigerants. We encourage everyone in the built environment sector to engage with this pilot version and prepare for the process of verifying buildings as net zero carbon compliant. It’s also a valuable tool for policymakers as it clearly outlines the path forward for the UK’s net zero carbon transition

Kat Adair, Senior Sustainability Associate, said: “We’re fully behind the adoption of this important industry standard. It will not only ensure we all have a unified approach to defining and verifying what “net zero carbon” means for buildings in the UK. Specifically, it offers clear, consistent guidelines for proving that built assets align with the UK’s carbon and energy budgets. This eliminates the previous lack of agreement and confusion around what constitutes a net zero carbon building, ensuring consistency and reliability across the industry.

“At Ridge, we’ve been proud to contribute our expertise to the Homes, Logistics, and Science and Technology Sector Groups over the past two years. Whether you’re involved in funding, procuring, designing or specifying a net zero carbon building, we would highly recommend using the standard.”
