THE ASPIRATION
Enhancing a historic school for modern learning
As one of the UK’s oldest independent schools, Abingdon School aimed to evolve its historic campus to meet the growing needs of its students and broaden its educational offer. The school’s vision included new state-of-the-art facilities for science, boarding, dining, sixth form and creative arts – all delivered with sensitivity to the school’s heritage, operational demands and sustainability ambitions.
OUR RESPONSE
Dynamic, future-ready facilities
Over several years, we’ve supported Abingdon School in delivering a series of distinctive, future-focused developments aligned with its educational vision and operational needs. Acting as Project Managers and Cost Consultants, these have presented unique challenges, from live campus environments and conservation constraints to fixed academic timetables.
At Beech Court, we provided Project and Cost Management services for a £6.4 million scheme combining a Sixth Form Centre, library and art department suite – creating modern, flexible spaces for learning and collaboration. Nearby, we delivered Cost Management for the £7 million dining pavilion, replacing a temporary facility with a striking, energy-efficient building that balances functionality and architectural sensitivity.
For the £12.1 million Boarding House programme, we managed both new build and refurbishment works across restricted sites – shaping procurement, mitigating risk and ensuring seamless delivery within term-time. At Faringdon Lodge, we supported cost control and risk management for a three-storey gateway building linked to science, delivered within a single academic year through careful planning and coordination.
We led Project Management for the Science Centre – a flexible, open-plan facility housing 21 laboratories and achieving a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
We also provided full Cost Management services for an extension to the prep school, delivered over a 47-week programme. The £3 million scheme added a new music school, science lab and classrooms to the rear of the site, alongside a library conversion and targeted refurbishment works, enhancing specialist teaching space while maintaining continuity for pupils and staff.
