Diamond Light Extension – Beamline Facility Oxfordshire

Designing a cutting-edge facility for world-leading research

THE ASPIRATION
Future-proofing a world-class facility
Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron, produces light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, enabling groundbreaking scientific research. After 20 years in operation, the facility required a new assembly and storage space to accommodate advancing beamline technology. The project also included office and laboratory space for 115 staff. The design needed to navigate significant site constraints, integrate critical infrastructure and ensure adaptability for future procurement and funding requirements.

OUR RESPONSE
Multidisciplinary design and innovation
We delivered multidisciplinary services, including Architecture, Building Services Engineering, Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering. Our team designed a state-of-the-art facility tailored to the assembly and storage of the national synchrotron while incorporating high-specification laboratories and flexible office spaces.

To tackle the site’s challenges, we held multiple design workshops, addressing risks posed by the tight layout and nearby critical infrastructure. Our BIM modelling approach enabled precise coordination, ensuring smooth integration of complex technical systems. We also developed a bespoke modular partition solution that met strict acoustic separation requirements while allowing for future adaptability.

THE RESULT
A high-performance, adaptable facility
We delivered a facility that not only meets Diamond Light Source’s current needs but is also adaptable for future scientific advancements. The innovative use of modular partitions, combined with strategic planning for infrastructure integration, has ensured the project remains efficient and future-proof.

THE LASTING IMPACT
Enabling pioneering scientific discovery
By creating a facility that supports cutting-edge research, we helped Diamond Light Source continue its mission to drive scientific breakthroughs. Our integrated approach, forward-thinking design and technical expertise ensure that the UK’s synchrotron remains a global leader in experimental science for years to come.
