THE CHALLENGE: Upgrading critical infrastructure

Gloucestershire Airport, the UK’s busiest general aviation airport, required major upgrades to its main and crosswind runways. The works included resurfacing, new lighting, upgraded signage, enhanced drainage and underground infrastructure for a future radar system. The challenge was to complete the improvements on a fast-track programme while keeping the airport operational, with minimal disruption to airfield activities and stakeholders.

OUR RESPONSE: Project and Cost Management support

We joined the project during the tender stage, providing NEC Project Management and Cost Management support. Working closely with the airport’s procurement team, we helped select the principal contractor, ensuring their approach aligned with the airport’s goals.

Once the contractor was appointed, we oversaw the phased programme, collaborating with the design team and key stakeholders to ensure the airport remained operational with minimal disruption. Our technical, operational and aviation expertise played a vital role in supporting key client decisions. With our experience, we effectively managed the scale and complexity of this landmark project – the client team’s first major undertaking.

THE RESULT: Modernised and future-ready

The project successfully delivered critical upgrades to Gloucestershire Airport’s runways. Over five months, the team completed 38,300 work hours, installing 10km of ducting and laying 20,000 tonnes of asphalt. A carefully phased approach ensured on-time, on-budget delivery while keeping the airport fully operational. These enhancements not only met but exceeded expectations, paving the way for future growth and long-term operational success.
