THE ASPIRATION
Pushing boundaries in vehicle acoustics
To stay at the forefront of vehicle innovation, a global automotive brand set out to create a flagship hub for its Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) operations. The centre would be a key component in a wider masterplan, providing advanced acoustic testing, precision-controlled lab space and extensive workspace for hundreds of engineers. The building needed to accommodate exacting technical and acoustic standards with no margin for error, and enable collaboration between engineers and test operatives.
OUR RESPONSE
Managing complexity with clarity and control
Appointed initially by Jaguar Land Rover and then novated to Laing O’Rourke Construction [Northern] Ltd, we led the £130 million development from concept through to construction, providing a full suite of multidisciplinary services. These included Project Management, Architecture, Civil and Structural Engineering and Building Services Engineering. From the outset, we worked closely with key stakeholders to shape a detailed brief that met demanding acoustic and environmental standards.
Our team produced coordinated design outputs at RIBA Stages 2 and 3, and following novation, continued as Lead Consultant throughout construction. Using a single, integrated 3D Revit BIM model, we brought together architecture, engineering and specialist equipment interfaces, helping to visualise and resolve issues before they reached site.
To meet the facility’s uniquely complex acoustic requirements, we developed an innovative ‘box-in-box’ construction solution using floating concrete chambers. This approach achieved acoustic isolation between test spaces while maintaining fire integrity and buildability.
We coordinated the phased delivery of 40 heavily serviced acoustic test chambers, each tailored to specific testing needs, including full-vehicle, powertrain and component testing. These chambers varied in size, acoustic cut-off frequency, climate control and noise criteria. Extensive plant areas were integrated both at high level and in the basement to support complex MEP systems.
To meet fire, acoustic and programme constraints, we introduced off-site prefabricated systems for the acoustic isolation assemblies – a UK first at this scale and complexity.
THE RESULT
A world-class facility, delivered with precision
The new 25,000 square metre NVH Centre is now a flagship research facility. Acoustic integrity is achieved through floating ‘box-in-box’ concrete chambers, while powerful HVAC systems support high-velocity testing. A continuous glazed roof maximises natural daylight and supports sustainability targets with integrated photovoltaics.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Setting new standards for technical delivery
The NVH Centre is now one of the largest purpose-built vehicle development facilities in Europe. Our leadership team ensured uncompromising technical performance and integration, underpinned by collaborative stakeholder engagement and rigorous BIM-led delivery. It stands as a benchmark for precision-led multidisciplinary design.

Perhaps one of the best examples I’ve encountered of carrying out the ‘Lead Consultant’ role. Very impressed with the attitudes and culture in Ridge towards working in the 3D environment and BIM modelling…I would say Ridge as a practice is ahead of other consultants of any discipline, especially in the use of BIM.
