Upgrading accommodation to modern military standards

THE ASPIRATION
Creating future-ready living spaces 

The Defence Academy provides world-class defence and security education to military personnel, government officials and international students. However, much of its Single Living Accommodation (SLA) was outdated, with some blocks dating back to the 1930s. Serco, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), wanted to upgrade over 100 beds across multiple accommodation blocks to meet modern Joint Service Publication (JSP) standards while improving student wellbeing and overall campus appeal. The challenge was to deliver cost-effective, future-proofed design solutions that enhanced the living experience and met strict military guidelines. 

OUR RESPONSE
Multidisciplinary design and costed options 

We provided a full suite of multidisciplinary services, including Architecture, Building Services Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Cost Management, Digital Engineering (BIM) and Health and Safety. Our team conducted a comprehensive feasibility study, reviewed the existing SLA estate and worked closely with Serco and MOD to develop costed design options tailored to the project’s goals. We consulted with key stakeholders from an early stage, ensuring designs aligned with the latest JSP standards and statutory UK regulations. Our phased approach maximised efficiency, minimised disruption and optimised the economic viability of the project. 

THE RESULT

Our designs modernise the accommodation blocks while respecting the site’s heritage, creating comfortable, fit-for-purpose spaces that enhance student wellbeing. The proposed solutions improve welfare facilities, communal areas and overall living conditions, making the Defence Academy a more attractive and functional environment for its diverse student population. By integrating cost-effective solutions with a clear phasing plan, we have ensured that the uplift programme is both practical and financially viable.
