THE ASPIRATION
Transforming Swansea’s cultural landscape
At the heart of a £135 million regeneration scheme, Swansea Council set out to create a striking new arena and surrounding public realm to re-energise the city centre. The vision was for a landmark cultural venue that would act as a catalyst for economic growth, strengthen community identity and showcase Swansea on a national stage. The scheme included a 9,800 square metre arena with 3,500 seats, a landmark pedestrian bridge, enhanced public realm, a multi-storey car park and mixed-use residential and retail space. With its curved façade, gold cladding and nearly 100,000 integrated LED lights, the arena was designed as a bold new icon for the city.
OUR RESPONSE
Managing complexity through collaboration
We provided Project Management services — including Employer’s Agent, Phasing Management and Tenancy Liaison — to guide the £100 million arena’s delivery as the centrepiece of Swansea’s wider regeneration. The project required extensive stakeholder engagement, navigation of public sector procurement protocols and close collaboration with the development manager and council officers across multiple departments.
A key challenge was incorporating late-stage changes, such as the integration of city-wide digital infrastructure and installation of living green walls, without disrupting the scheme’s timeline or budget. We tackled this through robust change control processes and proactive coordination, keeping the project aligned with Swansea’s regeneration goals.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we safeguarded momentum by adopting digital tools and flexible working practices. At the same time, we worked with stakeholders to preserve and integrate heritage assets, ensuring the development respected Swansea’s past while shaping its future.
THE RESULT
Delivering a landmark cultural venue
Completed in March 2022, Swansea Arena became the UK’s first major venue to open post-COVID, delivered on time despite the unprecedented challenges. The striking new arena anchors the wider regeneration, providing a dynamic space for live music, cultural events and conferences, while supporting surrounding residential, retail and public realm improvements.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Driving regeneration and community pride
The arena has transformed Swansea’s skyline and economy, drawing visitors, boosting local businesses and instilling civic pride. By helping bring this landmark venue to life, we supported the city’s vision for a resilient, future-ready cultural destination and laid the groundwork for long-term economic and social impact.
