The British Museum London

Safeguarding world-class heritage spaces for future generations

THE ASPIRATION
Protecting priceless heritage
The British Museum is committed to safeguarding its globally significant collections and providing the right environmental conditions for their preservation. This has required multiple sensitive and technically demanding projects, from the refurbishment of the Hirayama Studio to investigations into water ingress across the estate, and other specialist works. All needed to balance technical excellence with the highest levels of security and care for the collection.

OUR RESPONSE
Technical expertise, heritage sensitivity
For the Hirayama Studio refurbishment, we acted as Contract Administrator and Cost Manager. The works included upgrading lighting and daylight control, repairing water damage and preventing future penetration, upgrading underfloor heating, installing new ventilation systems and structurally reinforcing mezzanine storage with sympathetic stair and handrail additions.

With unknowns around heating, ventilation and water ingress, we used provisional sums to set realistic cost expectations. Combined with extensive value engineering, this gave the client confidence to move forward. Working within strict security protocols, we safely removed and stored valuable items like traditional Tatami matting and oversaw the careful dismantling and reinstatement of key fittings such as full-height storage cupboards. Repairs were sequenced to keep the programme on track and maintain quality.

In the leaks investigation project, our Building Surveyors carried out a detailed assessment of multiple affected areas, preparing a solid basis for targeted, long-term remedial works.

We have also provided BIM consultancy for the design and coordination of a £30 million new-build facility to store and showcase archaeological assets, aligning delivery with the contractor’s procurement schedule. In addition, we carried out condition surveys on two satellite buildings, drawing on our Building Surveying, Building Services Engineering and Structural Engineering expertise.

THE RESULT
Built for conservation
The Hirayama Studio now benefits from enhanced environmental controls, optimised storage and improved collection storage conditions, delivered within budget and on a fast-track timeline. The leaks investigation provided the Museum with a clear understanding of issues, enabling informed decisions for effective, lasting repairs. The new-build facility and satellite building surveys further strengthened the Museum’s long-term planning and asset protection strategies.

THE LASTING IMPACT
Future-proofing a national treasure
Through a combination of technical problem-solving, heritage sensitivity and collaborative planning, we helped the British Museum extend the life and usability of critical spaces. These works ensure both the immediate protection of collections and the long-term resilience of the building.
