THE ASPIRATION
Preserving a national treasure
The National Gallery has stood at the heart of Trafalgar Square since 1838. As a Grade I listed building housing a world-renowned collection, it must remain fully operational throughout even the most complex works. From major refurbishments and security upgrades to exhibitions and day-to-day maintenance, the Estates team required long-term, trusted support to deliver specialist projects with minimal disruption to public access or sensitive artworks.
OUR RESPONSE
Expert delivery in a live landmark
Since 1994, we have worked in partnership with The National Gallery under a long-term framework agreement, providing Project and Cost Management, Contract Administration, Structural Engineering and Principal Designer services across a portfolio of projects valued at over £10 million.
We have delivered a broad range of works, from gallery refurbishments—such as Gallery 29, with its ornate gold leaf interior, and the 40s Room series—to the phased replacement of roofs with patent glazed rooflights, internal laylights and new solar shading. We managed a £1 million upgrade to the Gallery’s CCTV and security infrastructure, oversaw the relocation of the Artist in Residence facility, and provided the Cost Management services for the Vestibule upgrade. As the Gallery moves forward into the digital age, we provided Cost Management and Contract Administration for the new Studio X interactive installation.
Additional projects have included the refurbishment of the Sainsbury Wing Theatre, improvements to the Education Block and the fast-track fit out of contractor accommodation to support future development.
All works are carefully planned and executed within a live, public environment. We incorporate stringent construction protocols such as vibration monitoring and diamond drilling to protect the fragile building fabric and artwork. Our cost plans are informed by live benchmarking, heritage supplier insight and a deep understanding of the specialist construction methods required. In-house technical input allows us to challenge assumptions, test proposed solutions and deliver strong value for the Gallery.
THE RESULT

Through decades of partnership, we have consistently delivered high-quality work across the estate, supporting The National Gallery’s operations while upgrading and preserving its infrastructure. Projects are completed with minimal disruption, protecting both visitor experience and heritage assets.
