University of Oxford – Institute for Developmental and Regenerative Medicine Oxford

Building a world-class research hub with smart project delivery

THE ASPIRATION
A pioneering research hub for medical sciences
The University of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division set out to create the Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine (IDRM), a cutting-edge 6,000m² research facility designed to bring together over 200 world-leading researchers. The university needed a commercially driven approach to project management, ensuring cost certainty while delivering a high-performance, future-proofed building. The facility also had to meet the ambitious Passivhaus energy efficiency standard, setting a new benchmark for sustainable laboratory design.

OUR RESPONSE
Project Management with a commercial edge
We were engaged as Project Managers to oversee the project from feasibility to completion. Our role included programme development, procurement strategy, stakeholder engagement and financial oversight. We streamlined the consultation process with Oxford’s academic and estates teams, challenging existing protocols to boost value and efficiency.

We introduced commercial project management techniques, including stakeholder management plans, project execution plans and dashboard reporting, improving project tracking and decision-making. This approach allowed us to integrate rigorous Passivhaus principles without compromising on laboratory functionality. The project also pioneered a single-stage design and build procurement strategy for the university, ensuring contractors were involved at the right stages.

THE RESULT
A high-performing, cost-effective facility
We delivered a cutting-edge research hub that balances world-class lab space with commercial efficiency. The design optimises operational performance, supports collaboration and meets Passivhaus energy standards – all within budget.

THE LASTING IMPACT
Setting new standards for university projects
Our work introduced a bold, commercially driven approach to the University of Oxford’s capital projects, setting a benchmark for future developments. Here we demonstrated how early strategic planning, clear cost management and tailored procurement can achieve world-class research environments while balancing sustainability, cost and adaptability.
