THE ASPIRATION
A zoo reimagined for conservation
Bristol Zoological Society embarked on an ambitious masterplan to relocate Bristol Zoo from its historic Clifton site to the expansive 55-hectare Bristol Zoo Project (formerly Wild Place Project). This transformation aimed to enhance animal welfare, create immersive visitor experiences and support global conservation efforts. The development includes world-class animal habitats, visitor facilities, education centres and a transport hub. Delivering such a complex project required careful phasing, budget control and alignment with sustainability and biodiversity goals.
OUR RESPONSE
Expert planning and project management
We were appointed as Project Managers to oversee the phased masterplan from RIBA Stage 3 onwards, ensuring seamless delivery of the new conservation zoo. Our team developed a structured project programme, carefully phased the works and devised an efficient procurement strategy.
We introduced a robust change control and value engineering process, supporting the client in targeting an ambitious 15% cost saving across the project. Close collaboration with stakeholders, from zoo staff to conservationists, ensured that the unique requirements of animal welfare, visitor experience and environmental protection were met.
Phase 1 focuses on the Central African Forest habitat, home to critically endangered gorillas, mangabeys, crocodiles and other species. Our role included managing ecological considerations, such as relocating native badgers and designing enclosures that prevent agile species like mangabeys from escaping. Every detail, from designing privacy areas for animals to ensuring enclosures withstand the strength of gorillas, was meticulously planned.
THE RESULT
A world-class conservation zoo takes shape
With Phase 1 underway and set to open in summer 2025, Bristol Zoo Project is on track to become a leading conservation-focused zoo. Our strategic management continues to support the smooth execution of the masterplan while maximising cost efficiency, quality and sustainability.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Inspiring future generations
Once complete, Bristol Zoo Project will welcome over 800,000 visitors annually, educate 90,000 schoolchildren and students, and train 600 conservationists. By creating a zoo designed around conservation, education and sustainability, we are helping to shape a facility that not only protects endangered species but also inspires future generations to safeguard the natural world.
