THE ASPIRATION
Creating an adventure in an historic setting
Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wanted to enhance its family visitor experience by creating an adventure playground that was both immersive and inclusive. The Lost Garden, a £3 million development, needed to provide a unique play environment inspired by the estate’s architectural heritage, ensuring accessibility for all abilities. The challenge lay in delivering a design that blended seamlessly into the historic walled gardens while incorporating innovative play elements. Safety, sustainability and minimal environmental impact were also critical considerations.
OUR RESPONSE
Collaborative design and smart engineering
We delivered multidisciplinary services, including Architecture, Project Management, Cost Management, Structural and Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Principal Designer services. We collaborated closely with CAP.Co, ASA Landscape Architects and other specialists to refine the initial brief and coordinate all design aspects. Our Project Managers guided the scheme from inception to completion, overseeing contractor selection, budgeting and site progress. Structural and Civil Engineers ensured sustainable solutions, including a balanced earthworks strategy and permeable drainage systems. Our Principal Designers managed risk assessments and safety compliance.
THE RESULT
A playful, inclusive and sustainable space
The 5,260m² Lost Garden Adventure Playground now offers an engaging, multi-sensory experience that balances excitement with safety. Inspired by Blenheim’s Grand Bridge and Hensington Towers, it features slides, tunnels, treetop walkways and a flowing rill. The carefully designed entrance creates a sense of discovery, while the play structures cater to toddlers through to teenagers. The project successfully integrates sustainable materials and construction methods, ensuring minimal environmental impact while delivering a world-class attraction.
THE LASTING IMPACT
A standout family destination
The Lost Garden has quickly become a standout attraction, enhancing Blenheim’s appeal to families. Its inclusive design ensures children of all abilities can play, while the thoughtfully integrated features create a unique and immersive experience. Visitors have responded overwhelmingly positively, reinforcing the playground’s success as a key part of the estate’s offering.
