THE ASPIRATION
Transforming public space across the city
Plymouth City Council is leading a bold programme to reinvigorate the city centre, restoring key heritage areas, improving public spaces and delivering long-term infrastructure that supports a greener, more accessible urban core. Projects Civic Square, Armada Way and Old Town Street and New George Street are central to the Council’s Better Places Plan and High Street Heritage Action Zone. The aim is to preserve Plymouth’s post-war civic identity while making the city centre fit for modern living, mobility and sustainability.
OUR RESPONSE
Delivering smart design in complex urban settings
We are delivering Civil and Structural Engineering across multiple city centre sites.
Work at Armada Way is in progress, where our team is delivering a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) that works with new planting to boost flood resilience, biodiversity and natural character for this kilometre-long urban park. Key elements include rain gardens, water rill and reed beds, retaining wall solutions, new tree planting with smart irrigation systems, seating areas, a play village and other public realm improvements. Site works have required careful navigation of buried utilities, ground voids and post-war ground conditions.
Completed schemes at Old Town Street and New George Street have enhanced pedestrian routes through the city’s shopping area with new paving, seating, a public events space and SuDS. Our work addressed legacy issues such as outdated public spaces and uneven pavements to improve accessibility.
At Civic Square, now complete, we supported the restoration of this Grade II listed park and garden including new granite paving, improved street lighting and footpath widening. The scheme also delivered new planting and restored heritage features as part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone.
Beyond these projects, we have supported the Council with refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Guildhall, structural inspections and repairs to key car parks, and technical advice on solar energy opportunities across its estate.
THE RESULT
Progressive infrastructure, rooted in place
These projects are already reshaping the city centre’s infrastructure, introducing sustainable systems, safer routes and inclusive design.
