THE ASPIRATION
Rethinking high-rise living
St George set out to create a 51-storey residential tower that redefined central London living, delivering luxury homes with panoramic views in a bold, skyline-defining development. The project’s ambition was matched by the complexity of its site. Tightly bounded by the River Thames, Nine Elms Road, existing developments and live rail infrastructure, it demanded innovative thinking and technical precision from the outset.
OUR RESPONSE
Engineering for height and complexity
We provided Civil and Structural Engineering services, navigating complex ground conditions, third-party approvals and design integration on an exceptionally tight site. In close collaboration with the client and appointed contractor, we led a successful value engineering exercise that delivered meaningful project savings.
Our team continued negotiations with London Underground, Transport for London, the Environment Agency, River Thames Authority and local Highways, ensuring technical requirements and approvals were delivered throughout. To realise the client’s vision of light-filled, view-led homes, we engineered a slender, glass-clad structure with minimal visual interruption – maximising transparency without compromising stability.
Given the building’s height and exposure, wind behaviour was a key challenge. We used wind tunnel testing and advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling to assess movement and pressure effects. These insights shaped the structural design, ensuring performance under all conditions and excellent comfort levels for residents.
THE RESULT
Raising the bar for city living
The tower now rises above the Thames, offering uninterrupted views across the capital and delivering high-quality homes in one of London’s most dynamic districts. The refined façade and slim profile elevate the cityscape, while robust engineering ensures lasting performance.
THE LASTING IMPACT
A landmark for London’s skyline
Vauxhall Tower (known locally as ‘The Pencil’) stands as a bold example of what is possible when innovation, collaboration and technical rigour come together. It transforms a challenging plot into a striking vertical community – one that celebrates the capital’s future while blending seamlessly with its surroundings.
