THE ASPIRATION
Enhancing Yas Marina Circuit for a world-class racing spectacle
Formula 1 and Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management (ADMM), organisers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, wanted to deliver more exciting racing for Formula 1’s season finale. The goal was to create closer racing, improve overtaking opportunities and refresh the experience for drivers and fans alike.
OUR RESPONSE
A multidisciplinary redesign
Working for Mrk1 Consulting and in close coordination with ADMM and Formula 1, we reviewed the entire circuit and identified the three areas that would have the biggest impact. Our Race Track and Civil Engineering teams redesigned several corners to improve flow, reduce tyre wear and increase overtaking opportunities.
We delivered concept designs, FIA track design packages, schematic and detailed designs, ensuring every modification met FIA Grade 1 standards. Our Project Management team oversaw construction, attended FIA inspections and kept the programme on track for completion ahead of the 2021 season finale.
We also created a comprehensive simulator model of the updated circuit for use in Assetto Corsa. Using our design drawings and reference photography, we meticulously recreated every detail in the virtual environment, bringing the new layout to life before race day.
THE RESULT
Delivering drama on the final lap
The modifications were completed and implemented for the first time in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The updates directly contributed to the dramatic final-lap championship decider, where Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton at Turn 5, one of the newly re-designed corners, to claim the title.

Securing Abu Dhabi’s motorsport legacy
The 2021 season last lap overtake has become an iconic image in Formula 1 history, and the revised circuit has provided more dynamic, competitive racing in the following years, offering drivers a more engaging layout. The work gives the venue longevity, keeps the event fresh for fans and strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a premium global motorsport destination.
