THE ASPIRATION
Creating a new heart for city learning
Cardiff and Vale College’s flagship campus was conceived as a bold new centrepiece for the city’s Enterprise Zone, transforming a disused brownfield site in the historic docklands into a world-class education hub. Designed by architects Sheppard Robson, the vision was to create a dynamic, inclusive space that would bring together academic, technical and community facilities, supporting economic growth and skills development across South Wales.
OUR RESPONSE
Engineering complexity with collaboration and precision
We provided Civil and Structural Engineering and Transport Planning services for the college’s 16,000m², five-storey campus. Designed around a striking wedge form and a central atrium, the building houses diverse facilities – from STEM labs and lecture theatres to a spa, gym, fine dining restaurant and flexible conference spaces.
The scheme demanded advanced structural solutions, including cantilevered floors and roofs extending over 10 metres, and complex interfaces between concrete and steel framing. Working in BIM using Revit, we delivered a fully coordinated digital model that enabled real-time collaboration and reduced on-site issues. The sloping site and phased city-centre location required meticulous planning to manage logistics and transport integration.
Our coordinated approach ensured structural integrity, efficient sequencing and smooth communication between design and construction teams.
THE RESULT
A cutting-edge campus built for the future
The £45 million campus was delivered on time and to exceptional quality standards. The result is an architecturally distinctive, energy-efficient building that provides state-of-the-art facilities for students and the wider community while forming a focal point within Cardiff’s Enterprise Zone regeneration.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Empowering education and community growth
The new college has become a catalyst for local regeneration, supporting thousands of learners each year and creating stronger links between education, business and innovation. It stands as a landmark example of how modern design and engineering can shape both learning environments and city futures.

Our Cardiff team led the structural engineering on this project, tackling challenges like cantilevered floors and a mix of steel and concrete frames. Delivering these solutions on a tight city-centre site - and now seeing the campus thriving, supporting students and driving regeneration in Cardiff - is something we’re truly proud of.
